What exactly is the project? The Katy Heritage Society is sponsoring ALL ABOARD KATY!. In 1895 the MKT Railroad established a depot in Katy. For the next hundred years Katy’s success was closely tied to the trains that brought our founding families and allowed them to prosper. To honor our rail history, steam engine locomotives have been chosen as the art form for this project. The locomotives are nine feet long and six feet tall and made of heavy duty fiberglass. After a locomotive is sponsored, an artist will work to paint the train to the sponsors specifications. If the sponsor doesn’t have a theme in mind, various artists have submitted ideas they can choose from. The name of the sponsor will be attached or painted on the locomotive and it will then be installed at a location chosen by the sponsor. Brochures promoting the project will list the locations of each locomotive so everyone will know exactly where to go to see the trains, who sponsored them and who painted them.
Who is participating? The Katy Heritage Society is organizing and implementing the program. ARTreach is coordinating the artists. A committee of “conductors” will oversee and coordinate the project, ALL ABOARD KATY! has been endorsed the Katy Area Chamber of Commerce, The Katy Economic Development Council and Texas Commission on the Arts. Local businesses that are already on board include
Christus St. Catherine Hospital. Their artist Catherine Gauldin came up with a great design incorporating the vision of Christus St. Catherine, and the train will be a wonderful addition to their campus on Fry Rd.
Beautiful special events venue Agave Road has sponsored a locomotive. Their artist is Ellen Chadick, the train is finished and installed at Agave Road on FM 1463.
Academy has finished the design of their train. When completed by their in-house artist Amy Wills, their locomotive will draw visitors to the Academy corporate office on Mason Road.
The Katy Heritage Park Board sponsored a train, purchased by the Kat y Heritage Society and painted by Carrie Currie and the Katy Area Artists, the train is now installed at Katy Heritage Park, 5990 George Bush Drive.
PBK in partnership with Tradition Bank, LaCenterra, Katy Magazine and Katy Main Street sponsored the "Waggin' Train' for CAP (Citizens for Animal Protection.) That train was painted by Kermit Eisnhut and is awaiting installation at the new CAP location on I-10 near Barker Cypress.
Exley Elementary has almost finished painting their beautiful train. The Exley Express is a colorful and creative train that will be installed at the school in early 2011.
Tradition Bank and ARTreach have sponsored a beautiful train that is being painted by local artist George Melchor.

Why sponsor a locomotive? Even in today’s tough economic times, sponsoring an ALL ABOARD KATY! locomotive makes good business sense. When you join us as a sponsor you will permanently attach your name or business name to a public art exhibit at the location of your choice. You will be helping to identify and unite the Katy area with a fun and creative public art project and joining a community effort to promote tourism and economic development. Your locomotive will generate traffic to your business and identify you as a supporter of the work of two important local charities. Your name and/or company logo will be featured on self-guided tour maps of the ALL ABOARD KATY! project, print advertising, all promotional materials and the ALL ABOARD KATY! web site. Locomotives are a long term investment in the Katy community.
What is the Katy Heritage Society and ARTreach? The Katy Heritage Society is a private 30+-year-old 501(c)3, nonprofit organization. From their offices in Katy Heritage Park and through outreach projects the group is working to protect and preserve the historic resources of the Katy area for the use, education, enjoyment and economic benefit of present and future generations. ARTreach is a 501(c)3 non profit organization that provides mentoring and art related programs to a growing population of children at risk and to others in need. ARTreach brings art-related programs and services to the underprivileged and the underserved, including children at risk, troubled youth, persons of all ages with special needs and victims of crime.
What does it cost to sponsor an Art Train? It costs $4,000 to sponsor a locomotive. The cost may be considered an advertising expense or may be tax deductible under the IRS tax guidelines for 501(c)3 corporations. Please consult a tax advisor. The cost may be invoiced and paid in installments, final payment must be made before the train will be installed.
Who are the artists and will they be paid for their work? We are grateful to have experienced commercial artists that can implement your design ideas and create a locomotive you will be proud to sponsor. We are currently seeking additional artists. Sponsors may also review our portfolio of designs that local artists have submitted for consideration. Artists are paid $700 to purchase supplies. Their names will also be on the finished locomotive and in all promotional materials. Artist applications are available on our website.
What if I don’t have a location for a train? We realize some businesses would like to sponsor a train but may not have a location for the finished product or may not think they can do it alone. For this reason we are introducing our CONCEPT TRAINS. These are locomotives that we are tagging with a theme. Concept trains will have one to four sponsors and will be parked at local non-profit agencies to draw attention to their cause. Our first concept train is the “Waggin’ Train” - a locomotive that will be decorated in a dog theme. The participating sponsor(s) will choose a Katy area animal rescue shelter, which will be the location for the train, drawing the public to their business to see the train and learn more about them. That shelter will also receive a donation from the Katy Heritage Society to further their good work. Our second concept train is the “Reading Railroad” - a locomotive decorated with a theme to advance literacy. This train will be placed at a Katy area library or other approved location. An additional train, Baby-on-Board will promote the Pregnancy Help Center.
Concept train sponsors will be listed in all brochures and publicity, and their name will be permanently attached to the finished locomotive that they sponsor. We are excited to introduce this way for more businesses to participate in the ALL ABOARD KATY! public art project. Full sponsorship of a Concept Train costs $4000. Concept Trains may also be sponsored by multiple businesses who will split the cost. Concept trains will be sponsored on a first-come basis.
How many locomotives will there be? The Katy Heritage Society has purchased 11 locomotives to get ALL ABOARD KATY! rolling. We hope to eventually have 20 trains on display in the Katy area. More locomotives will be ordered when sponsors have committed to the project.
If I can’t sponsor a train, what can I do to participate? You can join our Conductors Committee and/or donate your goods or services. We will need to develop brochures, maps, promotional products, T-shirts, publicity and much more. Our conductors will coordinate all those efforts. We will also need service to clear coat all the finished locomotives before they are installed at their permanent locations. If you can provide any of these services you can be a conductor and enjoy the ride and all publicity included with ALL ABOARD KATY!.
