Pedaling for patriotism, more than 30 little kids took part in the the Katy Heritage Society 2011 Independence Day Children’s Bike and Tike Parade on Saturday.
Held at Katy Heritage Park, children ages 3-8 decorated their bicycles and tricycles to celebrate the Fourth of July holiday.
“It's fun for them. They get to decorate their bikes and everyone gets a ribbon of some kind,” said Aggie Warmke, event organizer and Katy Heritage Society board member. “Everyone is really excited about the parade. The older kids probably understand the patriotic aspect of it more but everyone is having fun.”
The participants rode their decorated bikes and trikes through the park. As they paraded pass the Tradition Bank Bandstand, a panel of judges voted for the best entries, broken down into 3-4, 5-6 and 7-8 age groups.
“It feels great for us, seeing all the little kids and their parents coming together,” Warmke said. “They get to meet new people and learn about the park. We are here for the community.”
Girl Scout Troop 17277 was on hand to add to the patriotic feel. The girls handed out Patriotic Glider foam airplanes as they worked toward earning Local Lore Badges and a community service bronze award.
